Gowanus Darkroom’s residency program is a community based residency. Our goal is to foster inter-community learning and bring people together based on their love of traditional photography. The goal of our residency is to create an opportunity for the film photography community to learn and gather.

This award is for a photographer using the film or darkroom medium as the main driver of their work, at any stage in their career. Open to anyone age eighteen and above, who is not currently enrolled in an academic program. This residency will run for 3 months.

Our selected resident will have membership level access to our space, including 24 hour access and full reign of all of our equipment. At the end of the residency, you will be asked to lead a community talk, workshop, critique, or gathering of your choosing. This can be any event that brings community together, and can range from social events to talks and workshops in your specialty.

Gowanus Darkroom is located in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Our group b&w darkroom has 10 enlargers, and our color darkroom has 4 enlargers. We are capable up to print size 20x24, accepting all film formats, including large format. Our film processing sink is fully equipped to allow processing of black and white film only (color film drop off available) for all film formats. We offer hourly rentals, monthly memberships, film drop off services, and varying workshops. Our mission is to keep film photography alive and thriving.

Expectations & Opportunities for residents

We expect each resident to enjoy the facilities at Gowanus Darkroom and to:

  • Join our darkroom community and engage with our space as well as other photographers.

  • Be willing to hold one public presentation during your stay. This can mean teaching a course specific on your work, an artist talk, a group art critique, or any other idea you might have.

  • Participate in promoting Gowanus Darkroom during your stay. If you are willing, you’ll do an instagram takeover of our darkroom account for one week during your residency.

  • Appear on our website in a “Former Residents” section alongside a photo & short write-up regarding your stay (page to come!)

Please make your payment after you have filled out your application. Applications will not be filed until one price level is selected, and all funds go directly towards residency fees and costs. Please contact us directly for sliding scale application options. We do offer sliding scale payment for low-income applicants. Please email us at info@gowanusdarkroom.com for more information.
