We are pleased to welcome our Fall Artist Resident, Ibi Ibrahim, @ibiibrahim 🤍 we look forward to seeing what Ibi will create during his residency. We will be showcasing a selection of his work during our Open Studios event this October 19th and 20th. Please come by our space to see more!
Ibi Ibrahim (b. 1987, Michigan, United States) is a Yemeni-American visual artist and musician. He studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. Ibrahim’s work explores various thematics surrounding immigration, gender and resilience. All marked by notions of in-betweenness, transition and the diasporic human experience.
The photowork Ibrahim produced over the past decade aims to offer an idiosyncratic exploration of Arab identities through an artistic approach specifically highlighting queer Arab-American perspectives and intertwining storytelling with care practices, artistic research and advocacy. His work is part of a number of private collections as well as public collections including the British Museum, Colorado College, Arab American National Museum, Barjeel Art Foundation and Durham University Oriental Museum, among others. He is the co-author of the photobook Photography from Yemen (2024).

A beautiful final showing of Objects of Affection with Anne Schwartz @ew__as_if. Thank you Anne for being a part of our community during your residency period and thank you to everyone who participated!
We hope to see you all back here again, and we’re looking forward to our next residency period- application is live on our website now!
Wrapping up their Artist residency at Gowanus Darkroom, artist Anne Schwartz (@ew__as_if) will be running two sessions of a *free* alt process darkroom workshop on June 27th and Jul 1 <3 registration links are in bio! thank you @star_enemy for this flyer :)
In this workshop participants will create a set of unique, personally significant, wallet-sized sculptures. Collages of silver gelatin prints and unfixed photo-paper frames, these photo-sculptures will be constructed with fine-art analog techniques even as they take the everyday form of wallet-sized photographs, a reminder the affective and sentimental power of the material photograph as well as the presence of the sacred in the ordinary. The workshop will be accompanied by conversation about objects of affection, the continued significance of printed matter, alternative darkroom processes and... more.
Black and white printing experience required but I can offer a limited number of lessons before the workshop... so DM me...
Workshop is limited to 8 participants a session! *please only sign up for one session as space is limited!*
Just updated our summer class/workshops catalog! Come check us out this summer. We have AC 🤝 link in bio 😎
