This 6 week course will teach you all the basics of film photography from start to finish. Many of these techniques were developed over 100 years ago, and are still used in darkrooms around the world. After taking this lesson, you will be able to confidently work in a black & white darkroom and see your creative vision come to life in physical photographic form. You will cover shooting and camera basics, film processing, and beginner and intermediate darkroom printing techniques.

What to bring: Your film camera.
What is included?
All chemistry is included in this course rate. You will also receive Partial Membership at Gowanus Darkroom for the duration of the course, to use to complete your assignments for class. Throughout the duration of the class we will discuss additional materials to purchase week to week.
When?
December 2nd - January 20th (This class skips two weeks, 12/23 and 12/30 for Christmas and New Years)
Mondays, 6PM - 9PM
In this class we will cover shooting film, black and white film developing and negative viewing, making contact sheets and printing in a black and white darkroom. You’ll walk away from class with a basic understanding of how to get a beautiful print using traditional photographic techniques, taking home anything you make.
General schedule:
Week 1
Shooting and Camera Basics - Learn to use your film camera. This is an introductory class and will get everyone on the same page. Your assignment will be to shoot a roll of film.
Week 2
Developing Film
Week 3
Test strips and Printing in the Darkroom
Week 4
Contrast Printing/Dodging and Burning. Hone your darkroom skills.

Free Print
Week 6
Printing and Final Prints Viewing and Discussion
